NPLQ
The NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification) is the minimum qualification required for a person to obtain a job within most leisure centres. Some leisure centres will still accept the Bronze Medallion but will expect the applicant to train for, and achieve, the NPLQ.
The NPLQ is offered in two parts. Unit 1 is practical skills and knowledge and requires a minimum of 32 hours contact training time. Unit 2 is the application of supervision and rescue in a swimming pool. This effictively determines the candidates ability to apply what they have learnt under the unit 1 training. . Unit 2 requires a minimum of 7 hours contact training time.
The NPLQ is assessed by an external assessor upon completion of the required training and when the candidate is of the required level. The qualification is valid for 2 years. After 2 years, depending on ongoing training records, you will either undertake a 'retake' to re-qualify, or attend a new course.
As a candidate, you will be expected to ensure that you attend all training sessions and are punctual for sessions. Candidates will only be presented for final assessment once the required training has been completed. There are a number of training exemptions, those being candidates who hold First Aid at work, Life-support 3, Bronze Med, NARs Pl or Beach lifeguard. These exemptions need to be discussed with the trainers prior to embarking on a course.
Pre-requisites for NPLQ are:
The training syllabus for the NPLQ covers poolside, aquatic and classroom training. Therefore, suitable clothing should be worn for each session:
As a candidate, you will be required to bring along the following items to training sessions:
