Boscawen Lifesaving and Rescue Club were founded in 2004 to serve the users of Portland Harbour.
We are a group of volunteers who provide lifeguards and first aid services to the local community. We provide a lifesaving and rescue service at Portland harbour and provide lifeguard and/or first aid cover at organised events upon request.
History Named after
As well as providing on-going training for our members, we run courses for members of the public. All the courses we run are open to the public, although at a slightly higher cost. What's more, our courses can be adapted to suit YOUR needs. We may even be able to run the course at your place of work or, if you are a member of an organisation, at your meeting place.
Due to our active role in providing safety cover for members of the public, it is necessary for us to maintain a rigorous and regular training schedule.
Saturday Training
Saturday training is based at the Boscawen Pool on Portland and is split into one hour of classroom based theory and one hour of pool based activities. Classroom activities range from basic life support through to powerboat theory and radio procedure. Pool based activities include fitness and rescue skills.
Wednesday Training
Wednesday training only takes place during the summer months (May - September) and is based at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy. Training sessions involve the practical sides of using powerboats and rescue boards.
During the summer months (May - September) we train two nights a week. During the winter months we train once a week.
Summer training takes place on Wednesday and Saturday nights. Winter training takes place on Saturday nights only, due to the night closing in early.
